Taglit-Birthright Israel alumni bring their experiences to the stage!

The eclectic mix of actors spent a series of workshops with director Vanessa Hidary, star of HBO's Def Poetry Jam. The pieces take on a range of issues that include Chinese food, race, the Western Wall and husband-hunting!

Join us for a unique, musical Shabbat Davennin' Experience: Kol Tzedek's Kol Tehilla Service
 
Join us for a soulful davenning (prayer) experience with Kol Tzedek's "Kol Tehilla" (voice of praise).  Through a blend of traditional and contemporary music, energetic singing, and inspired dance, with your help we will bring the gift of Shabbos into our hearts and souls.  This is a worship experience you won't want to miss. 

We will usher in Shabbat with prayer and continue to celebrate the beauty of Shabbos with festive, Sabbath meals at the homes of Kol Tzedek community members.  Each host site will have a number of open spaces at their table.

Israel's turning 60, and to celebrate, we're taking part in the city-wide project, "60 Conversations for Israel at 60."  

Expect the same caliber of conversation that we've had at all our Guilt and Pleasure salons, but with a twist that connects us to Israel and to groups all over Philly having similar conversations this month.  Plus, no advanced reading this time!

Join the Philadelphia Jewish community at a city-wide celebration of the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel!

A parade will start at noon from 16th and the Parkway to Eakins Oval. The Grad Network will be marching in the parade with banners, school t-shirts, and lots of spirit! If you want to march with us, RSVP below, and we'll send you all the info about where to meet, etc.

 

Following the parade, there is an Israel Festival at Eakins Oval until 5:00 pm.

From 1-2:30pm, join other grads and young adults as we chill at the "Tel Aviv beach and cafe." Feel free to bring lunch, beach towels, frisbees, etc.

 "Jewish Peoplehood in the 21st Century and Beyond"

Participate in the provocative panel discussion on Jewish identity, "Jewish Peoplehood in the 21st Century and Beyond," presented by the National Museum of American Jewish History (http://nmajh.org/). Moderated by Dr. Rebecca T. Alpert, associate professor of religion and women's studies at Temple University, the program will feature a group of presenters representing the complexity of American Jewry.

Panelists include:
Rabbi Jon Konheim, a member of the Conservative Movement's Rabbinical Assembly and the Reform Movement's Central Conference of American Rabbis.
Andre Key, a graduate fellow at the Institute for the Study of Race and Social Thought and Center for Afro-Jewish Studies at Temple University.
Hanna Lau, a rising senior at the University of Pennsylvania and a curatorial intern at NMAJH.

Topics explored include ethnic diversity of Jews in America today and its implications for Jewish identity. Panelists will also address the personal and communal challenges multicultural Jews face as Jews and Americans.

House, Divided tells the story of the Goldstein family of Mt. Airy, Philadelphia, which is torn apart when older brother Louis decides to embrace Jewish orthodoxy and moves to Israel to become an officer in the Israeli army. Feeling betrayed but determined to follow his own heart, Louis' younger brother Douglas builds his life around peace activism, becoming a Senior Director with Amnesty International. After 30 years, however, the silence between them is broken when they are forced to engage one another when Louis' son, Oren, deserts the Israeli army and flees to America. At the same time, Douglas's son, Paul, turns away from his father's pacifist teachings to become a computer programmer who designs violent video games. Divided by deep familial wounds and opposing religious and political beliefs, Douglas and Louis try to bridge their estrangement by grappling with their sons' surprising life choices. House, Divided is a challenging and timely examination of family, faith and politics, and how the desire to distance ourselves from our past may bring it closer to home in the future.

Post-show discussions, which further illuminate the issues raised in House, Divided, follow several performances. Speaker Sundays, a series featuring invited scholars, community leaders and artists, are scheduled to follow matinee performances on Sunday, June 1, 8 and 15. On Sunday, June 1, the guest speaker will be Dr. Salman Akhtar, Professor of Psychiatry at Jefferson University.  Visit our website for the current schedule of speakers.
